The payment reality of the AI agent economy

Autonomous software increasingly needs to transact — book something, buy compute, pay for an API call — but almost every checkout in existence assumes a human is present to type in a card number and click confirm. An agent acting on a schedule or in response to another system has no interface to do that through, and no reason to wait for one, which means the payment step becomes the point where automation quietly breaks down.

The harder problem underneath is control, not connectivity. A human buyer has judgment and a bank statement to check against; an agent has neither by default. Without hard spend limits, explicit approvals and an audit trail, giving software the ability to pay is also giving it the ability to overspend, get exploited, or transact in a way nobody can later reconstruct when something goes wrong.
